What Kind of Place is Masdar City?
You don't have to imagine, because a city like this, with these features, exists in the world: "Masdar City".
Imagine a city that uses the latest technologies but is also in complete harmony with nature. A city that meets all its energy needs from renewable energy sources (wind energy, solar energy, thermal energy, etc.), has zero carbon emissions, uses its energy with the highest efficiency, and recycles its waste... This city, owned by the United Arab Emirates, acts as a large laboratory with the projects it houses. The construction of the city, initiated by the Mubadala company, is still ongoing. Masdar City is therefore a project in progress. When completed, it is planned to be home to forty thousand people. The budget allocated for the project is approximately twenty billion dollars. Although the completion year was set for 2021, the project delivery date has been moved to 2025 due to financial issues.
The element that makes Masdar City a great laboratory is that it hosts different projects.
The Beam Down Project, autonomous driving, Wind Towers that provide natural air conditioning by capturing wind, and the Middle East's largest solar farms are located in Masdar City. Its carbon dioxide emission-free nature is another feature that makes this city nature-friendly. Cars that run on petroleum and its derivatives are banned in this city. For transportation, electric buses and cars, bicycles, a metro, and in addition, a Personal Rapid Transit system have been established. With this system, you can board unoccupied vehicles waiting at the station, enter your destination, and with the push of a button, the vehicle will take you where you want to go. The vehicles are designed to be able to self-charge. In Masdar, located near the Abu Dhabi desert, "Wind Towers" have been designed to cool the streets. These towers capture the wind from above and bring it down. The beauty of it is that these towers do not consume any energy. This way, Masdar City is cooled and made habitable without consuming any energy. The solar panel fields located in the center of Masdar City are set as the main source of energy for the city. The number of panels is eighty-eight thousand. These panels provide green energy not only to Masdar City but also to Abu Dhabi. This city, where technology and nature work hand in hand, promises hope for the future. Especially as our world's future is threatened by major environmental disasters, this nature-friendly city seems to be an example for all world cities in terms of enabling all living beings to live healthily and peacefully.
